Years 10-11 (Age 14-16)
GCSEs
Foundation of your academic record
GCSEs are the most important qualifications at this stage. They underpin everything that comes next — Sixth Form, college, A-Levels and even your University application.
What they want
- Strong grades across English, Maths and Sciences (grades 7-9 for top Sixth Forms)
- Subject breadth — usually 9-10 GCSEs
- Evidence of curiosity beyond the syllabus
- Consistent effort shown via predicted grades and mocks
What are GCSEs?
GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) are subject-based qualifications taken at the end of Year 11. Most students take 9-10 subjects. Grading is 9 (highest) to 1, with 4 considered a 'standard pass' and 7 equivalent to an old A grade.
Subject choices that matter
English Language, English Literature, Maths, and the Sciences (Combined or Triple) are required by nearly all UK universities. The EBacc combination (English, Maths, Sciences, a Language, History or Geography) keeps your A-Level options wide open.
How they're assessed
Mostly through written exams in May-June of Year 11. Some subjects have coursework or NEAs (Non-Examined Assessments) like Art, DT, and Drama. Mock exams in Year 11 give you predicted grades.
What top Sixth Forms expect
Selective state Sixth Forms (e.g. King's College Maths School, grammar schools) and independent schools often demand 7s and 8s — sometimes 8s and 9s. Aim high: a strong GCSE profile keeps every door open.
