Sixth Form Applications

Choosing where you'll do A-Levels

Where you do your A-Levels matters. Selective Sixth Forms, grammar schools, and independent schools have competitive applications that open in autumn of Year 11.

What they want

  • Strong GCSE predicted grades (often 7s and 8s)
  • Genuine interest in your chosen A-Level subjects
  • A personal statement explaining your subject choices
  • Reference from your current school
  • Sometimes: entrance tests or an interview

Types of Sixth Form

Three main options: (1) Stay at your current school's Sixth Form, (2) Sixth Form College (e.g. Hills Road, Cambridge), (3) Selective state schools (grammars, King's Maths School, Harris Westminster) or independent Sixth Forms (Eton, Cardiff Sixth Form College).

When to apply

Most applications open September-November of Year 11. Deadlines vary — some highly selective ones close as early as October. Check each Sixth Form's website in September.

What to write in your personal statement

Why these subjects? What books/podcasts/courses have you engaged with beyond the curriculum? What do you want to study at university? Specific examples beat vague enthusiasm every time.

Interviews

Selective Sixth Forms often interview shortlisted candidates. They'll ask about your subject choices, current studies, and supercurricular interests. Be ready to discuss a recent book or article in your chosen field.
